The burdened legacy. Why the Left can hardly shake off its hatred for Israel
Why is there even antisemitism and hatred for Israel on the Left? In German left-wing circles, both are often explained by unconscious feelings of guilt that the descendants of the Nazi perpetrators try to deflect because of the Shoah. The failed bomb attack by the Tuparamos West Berlin on the Jewish Community in November 1969 clearly shows the connection. In addition, for the history of the radical Left, there are other motives such as a left-wing nationalism that supports all “national liberation movements” – except for Zionism – or a personified, fetishized “anti-capitalism” that is associated with certain ideas about “the Jews”. This burdened legacy also shapes the reactions to October 7, 2023.

Antifa Against Antisemitism – Education Day at AZ Conni
October 7, 2023 marks a turning point. The most devastating antisemitic pogrom since 1945 brought much suffering to the victims of the terrorist attack, their families and friends, as well as to the only shelter for Jewish life worldwide, the State of Israel. Often forgotten are the non-Jewish dead and abducted. This attack was aimed at all Jewish life and continues to this day from many sides.
This day also marks a turning point for the (radical) Left, worldwide. Even on the day of the pogrom itself, there was solidarity in many countries with those who seek to destroy all Jewish life. Here too, there is continuous showings of solidarity with those glorified as enemies of humanity as resistance and freedom fighters.
While the enemies of Jewish life appear loudly and publicly everywhere, the emancipatory Left, including us, have failed to articulate decisively and visibly against antisemitism, even within our own ranks.
We therefore invite you to join in a common exchange.
The Education Day is an event organized by Ostra e. V. in cooperation with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Saxony and is supported by AZ Conni. This measure is co-financed by tax funds based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
