DresdenContemporaryArt e.V. / Network Media Art presents for the Neustadt Art Festival “Dark Matter IV: The Bayefall – The Concept of non-violence” a 6-channel video installation on the mystical brotherhood of the Bayefall Mourides in West African Senegal.

In winter 2023/24, Andreas Ullrich was a guest for a two-month field research with the Mouride Sufi movement of the Bayefall, which exerts a great spiritual and cultural influence in West African Senegal. The practice of the brotherhood consists of ritual gatherings, the Magal, where recitations and meditative percussion motifs are combined throughout the night with collectively performed movements that induce a communal trance and bring all participants together as an acting and feeling entity. These ceremonies were artistically documented and extensive interviews and soundscapes archived, which form the basis for the development of the planned multimedia spatial installation.

Furthermore, a concert with Seljuk Rustum, a South Indian multi-instrumentalist and sound artist, will take place in this installation, adding another level of experience and meaning to this work.
