by Leoni Hannah

She tries to tear the bodies away from the tree trunks and breaks delicate branches with her hands; from there blood drops flow like from a wound. (Metamorphoses by Ovid)

The current painting of Leoni Hannah oscillates between root-like structures and bizarre transformed bodies. Distortions of her previous paintings serve as the starting point for these metamorphoses, whereby formerly figurative elements are photographically distorted, then dissected and rearranged. Urban and natural impressions from her travels to Morocco, Italy, and Switzerland are interwoven in her works to create new structures.

The Canadian-born artist from Sauerland engages with phases of continuous change, arriving in her present home as well as with the fragile relationship to her own physicality and existing ideals of beauty. Despite the constant change, the respective state proves to be more consolidated than the previous one, as shown in vibrant colors and clearly delineated areas. Absence of objectivity and omissions reveal the often fragmentary, searching nature of Leoni Hannah’s works.

Leoni Hannah has been working artistically for seven years, mainly in the genres of painting and graphics. In addition, her oeuvre also includes sculptures and installations. In the summer of 2022, she began her studies at the HfBK Dresden, where she engages with medium, process, and limits of painting in Prof. Christian Sery’s class for interdisciplinary and experimental painting.

In addition to the exhibition, the artist plans a suitable installation starting at 6 pm.
